1. Switch to runlevel 3
2. Download http://perso.mandrakesoft.com/~civileme/Xtart Drop it in
/usr/bin and use it to start X withyour favorite Window manager.
3. Disable Aurora
kdm is causing some serious problems with NVidia version 1.0, Voodoo, and ATI
Radeon drivers, and further the ATI Radeon drivers are yet buggy from XFree.
You don't get much in the log files. When the crash comes, X goes into state
D and is waiting for kdeinit to release it. The keyboard is still responsive
but X cannot be switched off or killed. And if you are using Aurora, then
Aurora is waiting for X to exit so it can bring up the framebuffer to show
you the shutdown procedures--total deadlock. I duplicated this without any
special video card by logging in and out of console and graphics until it
happened, and the existing ssh connection was active, and the ctrl-alt-del on
the keyboard of the crashed machine did broadcast the shutdown message.
